Eve

I shivered, staring at the witch sitting across from me.

Hidden depths full of monsters.

It described Lachlan well. But what were the monsters? The Dark Moon curse?

Yes. But maybe there was more?

No. I needed to drag my mind away from Lachlan. She’d taken the truth potion, and this was our moment. I needed to be subtle, though. If I was, she’d feel compelled to answer but, hopefully, not register it as too invasive.

“There’s really no other supernaturals who come here?” I asked. “Not even a trace of them?”

She frowned, her gaze going fuzzy. “No, I’ve never seen—” She shook her head and rubbed her temples. “Actually, maybe I have.”

“Seen what?”

“Sometimes in the morning there’s a residue of dark magic on the air.”

“After the place has been empty?”

“Yes. I’d forgotten about it, though.” Her eyes flashed to mine. “Why would I forget that?”

Because someone made you.

I shrugged. “Maybe it just didn’t register.”

“Yeah.” She nodded, clearly trying to convince herself.

Lachlan returned with the drinks and set them down on the table. I gave him a quick look, hoping he could read in my eyes that I wanted to ask the questions.

“Do you often see the residue of dark magic in the morning? Maybe it was a one-off, and that’s why you forgot it.”

She tilted her head, brow furrowed, as she tried to think back to it. “Yes, now that I think of it. More lately. A few times a week, in fact.”

Hmm. Someone was using the pub in the off hours, and they weren’t fully scrubbing away what they’d done.

“Do you practice your magic here?” I gestured between the three of us. “This kind of thing? Or do you also make spells to fix relationships? Like ours,” I added for good measure.

“No real spell work—no. Just a counselor using my gifts to get a feel for people. And yeah, sometimes I work out of here.”

Hmm. So the person probably wasn’t after anything that she was making. I sincerely doubted my attacker had any kind of romantic relationship, much less a trouble-in-paradise one that he’d seek help for.

Her gaze flashed to mine, growing suspicious. “You’re here for relationship help, yeah?”

“Yeah. Thanks for it, by the way.” I stood. We’d gotten as much as we could. I looked at Lachlan. “Ready?”

He drank half his beer, then rose. “Aye.”

The witch watched us leave, confusion on her face. Together, we walked out into the night.

“I hope you got everything we needed, because I missed half of that.”

“Yeah.” I hurried across the street. “We need to find a place to wait. I’ll update you.”

I looked around the quiet street. Where would be hidden enough for us to wait while the pub closed for the night? My gaze snagged on the darkened windows of a flat above a shop. It was a risk, but it had a great view of the pub. I pointed to the windows. “Let’s go there.”

He nodded, and we found the narrow door between the chip shop and a florist.

Lachlan twisted the handle, breaking the lock with ease, and we stepped into the narrow stairwell, climbing to the top.
